Cake Smash

January 28, 2022

Cake smashes are a fun and messy experience for your little one to enjoy some birthday cake and celebrate turning one!

My cake smash sessions take place in my studio and I design the set around your colour scheme or theme. You can have anything from pompoms, balloon garlands, pinwheels, streamers, balloon stands or even a theme with your favourite characters. After the cake has been eaten it's time to jump in the bath tub to get rid of all the icing and have a splash!

In between working I try and photograph my own family, it's so important to capture life even the everyday things. This may be candid images of the children sleeping, painting, playing in the garden, running around like lunatics or just playing nicely together and on the rare occasion I'll try to photograph them in the studio.

So for Ruby's 1st Birthday we opted for a cake smash to celebrate and capture her at this age. One is such a lovely age, and their personalities are developing so quickly and constantly changing. Ruby had started walking at 11 months, had 4 teeth and beautiful locks of hair with tiny curls at the back. All these little details about Ruby at this age have been captured beautifully and can be treasured for years to come.

This session actually took place March 2019 and I still love the photos. I chose a pink ,cream and rose gold colour scheme and created a balloon garland to hang, along with a beautiful velvet outfit for her to wear. We kept it simple with a small cake with painted flamingos.

Before the cake smash, and like with all my sessions I like to take portrait images before anyone gets covered in cake. As I wanted to be in these photos I set up my tripod to take a few photos of the 4 of us together, and then a few of Harrison and Ruby together. It's not often I'm in the photos as I'm always taking the photos but its so important to be present in photos even if its just a selfie, one day it will be all your loved ones are left with, make the memories.

Like a lot of toddlers Ruby hadn't yet tried cake, but she soon got in to the swing of it. One taste of the buttercream and she was soon digging the spoon in for more sponge cake! It was clear after 15 minutes Ruby takes after me with a new found love for cake! Once the cake had been truly smashed it was time for a bubble bath! I use a lovely vintage bathtub that I bought from Battlesbridge Antiques one of my favourite places to mooch around for quirky purchases. I took some wonderful images of her splashing around in the bubbles with the rubber duck, she had fun and so did we watching her react with the new experiences of the afternoon.

A year on from her 1srt Birthday shoot, I planned a mini 2nd Birthday celebration and this time I used donuts. It was amazing to compare and see the difference a year makes, her smile had changed (she had more than 4 teeth!) long hair down to her shoulders and even more energy!
